ULA is excited to collaborate with Kestrel Knives to bring you the ULA Alpha Knife! Proudly made in the USA, the Alpha Knife weighs a mere 24 grams. The Nitro V steel sheepsfoot blade is designed to slice with ease. This blade is perfect for those that weigh their gear in grams and is sure to become a staple in any backpacker’s kit.
The production run for this edition is limited to 250 pieces - each knife comes boxed with an individual COA marked x/250.
ULA X KESTREL: THE STORY
We did not know it at the time, but the genesis of this collaboration between ULA and Kestrel started 10 years ago. Nathan, the owner of Kestrel, posted his first “Ultralighter” knife on a forum and I was instantly in love with the fixed blade, size, and lack of weight. If you’re an internet sleuth, you can still find the original forum post today!
I’ve always loved knives and have been torn balancing the size and weight of fixed vs. folding knives. Since most backpackers use knives primarily to prep food with some secondary consideration for preparedness, a heavier fixed blade isn’t optimal. Most backpackers use knives to slice cheese, meat, and veggies. Sanitation is also more of a concern with a folding blade as there is always the inevitable food bits that end up in the mechanism and handle.
The ULA Alpha is the result of Kestrel and ULA’s effort to produce a knife that blended ultralight and functionality while offering a premium steel.
We partnered with Kestrel knives because of our mutual commitment to made in USA products which you get in both the Alpha and sheath. Beyond a unique design, we wanted to put our ULA heritage into the knife, so we printed the Kydex sheath in our legacy color of Green Robic.

Great fixed blade for hiking and backpacking.
This will be my primary hiking and backpacking knife instead of one of my Benchmade folders (Osborne, Mini-Griptilian, Mini-Bugout)
The overall design and ergonomics are very good for a knife of this size. Before it arrived, I was expecting to have to wrap some cord around the handle but the handle design and positioning & style of jimping work well to provide a secure grip and plenty of pressure. (FYI – My Hestra /OR gloves size is 10/Large)
I missed reading about it in the features but this Kestral knife has a similar Lifetime sharpening service as Benchmade .. $5. I have a Wicked Edge system but given the shape of the blade, I’ll probably send it in.
The Kydex sheath fits the blade very securely. There are lashing points but that is not my style of carry for this type of knife and use-case. It will be in my DCF Essentials bag. It easily fits in the ULA hipbelt pockets on my Catalyst and Photon if somebody wants quicker access.

Good handfeel for a size L. Nice steel. Nice shape, good edge and thumb knurl, 24g. Nice sheath, but could have a better “pop,” and grommets could be in better spots for lashing, 6g – 4 stars.
